one single gal to another, on the subject of babies, career, and all that jazz

No, it doesn’t make us bad friends to feel weird when we get this kind of news. It just hightlights the dramatically different paths our lives are taking. It’s impossible not to notice. Our friends who are married with kids want different things from life than we do. They want to have some kids and work a little, but their careers aren’t very important to them. They married older dudes who already had dough or a very strong will and are pretty much living to take care of them. There is nothing wrong with that. It’s what they wanted, and they got it, and they are happy. Well, for now anyway.

I definitely want someone to take care of me, but not in an overly dependent way. Whether or not I marry & have kids, my career will always be a very important aspect of my life. I need to find someone who not only can accept it, but who understands and can give me the support I need to pursue my dreams. It’s just how I am wired — I’m Irish… I’m a workhound, and a dreamer. Besides, when you have financial independence I think you can make better choices about who to spend your time with. Money should not be a reason for choosing a mate.

how has it come to this?

that i am being asked to purchase, if willing, a $35 kate spade donner road christmas mug (actually, the bride requested 8 … $280 worth of designer christmas mugs). wedding registries are so goddamned crass. the whole thing disgusts me and i don’t know how i keep summoning the patience to go to these festering affairs. no matter how much i love the woman, it goes against my very constitution.

sigh.

despite these protestations, my bite loses to my bark because fellowship trumps all. even kate spade mugs.

holy shit the personal trainer kicked my ass. REAL REAL hard. typing is tough. time to load up on the advil. the good news is, this is the beginning of my effort to seriously get back in shape. i have not been this out of it in years. it’s been a year-long slide down into the current slump. at one point, not that long ago, i epitomized fitness. so it was tough to hear the dude lecturing me on my diet and the need to be consistent with my workouts. it’s all shit i know but have chosen to ignore in recent months. my issue has always been my extremism. i’m not just going to run, i am going to run MARATHONS. i’m not going to just take it easy, i am going to unravel into a state of complete SLOTH. it’s like that billy joel song:

Darling I don’t know why I go to extremes
Too high or too low there ain’t no in-betweens
And if I stand or I fall
It’s all or nothing at all
Darling I don’t know why I go to extremes

tube top or boob top, you decide.

for me, it was the montvale roller rink. the song was ‘Shaddap You Face’ by Joe Dolce Music Theatre (Hey, what’s a matta you?). there were those races where one person stands and pushes the partner who is crouched down, hugging knees. my BF christine and i tried but never won. also we wore those braided barettes with the ribbons and beads — made them ourselves.

feather clip, or roach clip. you decide.

i’m gonna rock acid wash jeans and a coca-cola or benneton rugby (the blue benneton rugby was the most coveted of them all)
