i am in the middle of watching “the seven year itch.” old school billy wilder/marilyn monroe comedy circa 1955 about what nyc professional men do in the summer time when their wives take the kids out of manhattan to their summer homes.
in that old-fashioned world, wives are babysitters and upholders of the moral standard. when they skip town, bedlam strikes. husbands booze, gamble, smoke and mack on chicks like crazy. in that world, men are like children — they can’t be trusted to be on their own.
how exhausting for the women. i don’t want to be someone’s moral upholder. i have a hard enough time upholding myself … and how condescending for the men. expecting so little of them.
