Wait, is that The Dude spouting off?

No it’s Steely Dan taking Owen Wilson to task in what appears to be a mutually beneficial publicity stunt.

One that I love, by the way.

The letter itself reads like a hyperbolic rant from The Dude in The Big Lebowski. The fact that it is linked from the front page of Steely Dan’s web site and is addressed to Luke is highly suspect.

But what really tips the whole thing off is Owen’s response: “I don’t even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to concentrating on my new movie, ‘HEY 19.'”

A public, verbal joust pitting the Pretzel Logicians against the Butterscotch Stallion. It’s just a coincidence that the former is touring right now and the latter has a big movie out, right?

What I wouldn’t do to have been around when this one was hatched. Best friggin’ prank/guerrilla marketing effort I’ve witnessed in a long while.

in reading the letter over again i am beginning to think that the butterscotch stallion himself and perhaps some of his associates may have actually written the thing.

just the LOOK of it … courier type, neat looking letter format is reminiscent of RUSHMORE, TENENBAUMS. and the voice … yeah there’s quite a bit of owen in there. perhaps some wes.

maybe traci will run into luke in pastis again and this time she can ask him about the letter instead of just telling him she likes owen better (which, yes, she actually did. to which he replied, “yeah, i get that a lot.” it was a sunday afternoon and he was alone at the bar, drinking and reading and, as traci described it, looking pretty “banged up.”)
